the great blizzard of 2010

The year I was a senior in high school, we got a LOT of snow in Raleigh- school was cancelled for over a week. We lived in a small, hilly neighborhood outside of the city limits, without city services like snow plows and except for my brother and his annoying friends, there was only one other person near my age in the neighborhood to enjoy the snow with. Aside from the fact we got a few days off from school, I did not enjoy snow and decided to go to college in Florida where I would not have to deal with cold and snow.

Outside of being in New Hampshire in February last year for Kate and Garrett's wedding, this is the most snow (4-5in?) I've seen in years. It's much more enjoyable when you can drive a car yourself and have people to enjoy it with! So yesterday, my friend Maria and I went to the park a mile from my house and spent a few hours sledding and snowboarding. 'Twas brilliant fun!

Having no sled of our own, we experimented with multiple improvised sleds: laundry basket, cookie sheet, the lid of a Rubbermaid container, cardboard boxes, and garbage bags. The best was a cardboard box inside of a garbage bag. As is the norm with me, I spent half the time flying down the hill backwards, or lying face down in the snow.
For the first hour we were there, there were only adults, no kids, sledding- beautiful! A family had an enormous 4-person toboggan that they happily let anyone who wanted take a ride on. That far exceeded our improvised sleds! Maria is a snowboarder and, lucky for me, we have the same size feet, so she let me give it a try. I could stay on my feet pretty well, until I tried turning. That'll have to wait till we (hopefully) go again in Colorado in May.
