Just One Book
A few days ago, Allison tagged me with this book meme. So, here goes. How I am supposed to choose just one book that made me cry, I have no idea!!1. One book that changed your life:
Desiring God by John Piper
I read this in college and it totally changed the way that I view Christianity and how I am supposed to be living my life.
2. One book that you’ve read more than once:
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
So I've read all of the Chronicles of Narnia many, many times. I love them so much! I try to make it a practice to re-read them every two or three years. I think I'm overdue.
3. One book you’d want on a desert island:
Clarissa by Samuel Richardson
This is supposedly the longest English language novel- over 1,000,000 words. When I took 18th Century Gothic Novel in grad school, the prof talked about it ALL the time and it piqued my interest. However, unless I am on a deserted island, I doubt I will ever read it.
4. One book that made you laugh:
Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
This was a hard one to answer. It made me realize that most of the books I read are rather somber and depressing!! But this one made me laugh out loud- there's a character who speaks English as his second language and is constantly using words subtly incorrectly.
5. One book that made you cry:
Ava's Man by Rick Bragg
I love Rick Bragg's characterizations. When Charlie died, I wept.
6. One book that you wish had been written:
Harry Potter and He Who Shall Not be Named by J.K. Rowling
OK, so the title is really not very important. I am just super-ready for the seventh Harry Potter book to come out. I was really sad that there was nothing new in the HP world for me to enjoy this summer!!
7. One book you wish had never been written:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
Not for any particular reason other than that I was assigned it in high school, procrastinated reading it till the day before it was supposed to be read, read for five hours, hated it, and quit. Most other books from high school that I didn't read I've wanted to read since then. Not Tess.
8. One book you’re currently reading:
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
I'm reading this because it is on the summer reading list for the 11th grade IB English class I will be teaching starting in a week. All the other English teachers told me that it is depressing and they hate it, but so far I'm enjoying it. Maybe it's just the low expectations.
9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:
Not the Way It's Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin by Cornelius Plantinga
When I worked for RUF, my boss bought this one for me. I really have been meaning to read it for the last 5 years!! The title is what attracted me to it.
