home alone

My parents and brother are headed to Atlanta for Thanksgiving, but today I am home all alone, cleaning. Drama seems to surround this house whenever I am home on week days. When I took a day off a month ago, a van managed to cross the yellow line twice and hit 3 cars parked on the opposite side of the street from the lane it should have been in. Thankfully, not mine.

Today, as I was sitting on the couch eating my breakfast, sirens began to fill my ears. When the sirens did not pass by, I got up to find at least 4 fire trucks, numerous police cars, and other rescue vehicles parked in front of my house. When I opened the door to see if I could figure out what was going on, all I heard was "first floor apartment" and saw someone pointing to the apartment closest to our house, maybe 20 feet from wall to wall. I convinced myself that there was a gas leak and our house would explode as well, so I quickly dressed and left. By this time, the whole street was blocked off and I couldn't get my car out, so I walked to Starbucks and sat for a couple of hours and graded papers. I could see smoke pouring out of the roof of the apartment building, on the opposite side from our house, thankfully.

When I got back 2 hours later, all the commotion was over and a pile of broken windows and charred things now sits on the curb. I haven't been able to find anything more about it except this. Thankfully, it seems that no one was hurt and there was relatively little damage done.
