The Garden State
Alas, my trip to Princeton over MLK weekend afforded very little snow. It did however afford a wonderful time with my dear friend Sarah and her husband, Chris. My flight there was a little traumatic- a man had a seizure on the plane when we were 2nd in line for take off, already running at least an hour behind schedule. When I finally got to Newark and race through the airport to the rail link, the train to Princeton was departing as I reached the top of the escalator down to the platform and I had to wait another half hour.
Saturday, Sarah and I spent the day sauntering around Princeton in the cold. We walked through campus, the public library, and of course, the cemetery. Jonathan Edwards and Aaron Burr are buried there, along with Grover Cleveland. Edwards' gravestone is written in Latin. I did not retain much of my Latin from college and could hardly read any of it, so we made up a fascinating story of his life, based on some loose cognates.

Sarah then took me to this grave... HI-larious!!
Then we romped through the woods outside of Einstein's Institute for Advanced Study. Though it was a dreary, overcast day, I could envision people walking, pondering, coming up with brilliant theories. Or that it was the woods in either of Frost's woodsy poems. The evening involved a Scrabble debacle... And then there was Sunday! As we stepped outside to meet some of Sarah and Chris's friends (who also happen to be Jeremy's friends from Dartmouth), there was a snow flurry! Unfortunately, it neither stuck in Princeton nor continued snowing outside of it.
We worshiped at Redeemer- wonderful to hear Tim Keller preach live for the first time. Sarah and I then stopped at a random diner for lunch and then headed to the MOMA. Got to see Starry Night, and tons and tons of Impressionists. It was lovely. And a break from the day's high of 20. We headed down to SoHo and tried to find a HUD used bookstore, to no avail. We did some shopping in Chinatown and then headed to the East Village for Indian food. It had been about 5 years since I'd been to NYC and it was fun to explore parts of Manhattan I'd never seen.
Overall, the weekend was wonderful because I got to catch up with Sarah, and have good conversation and many silly laughs and be known.
