thick skin

The piece of advice I keep receiving from the people ahead of me in my program is that I need to put on my thick skin. People will be blunt, I'm going to get lots of criticism (constructive, of course?), people will tell me that my work is not up to snuff and needs to be redone. None of this is personal, they tell me, just they way things work.

So yesterday was Peabody orientation and we spent a couple hours with just the 5 members of my cohort, a few 2nd and 3rd years, and a bunch of faculty. The faculty went around and shared their expectations for us and gave us bits of advice. The advise session ended with this bit, from a prof who had already informed us (we got the PG version apparently) that 90% was not good enough, he expected 100%:

"No one will like your work. Get a dog." And he walked out of the room.

you can borrow huck if you need him - he's only bad when you're around but is quite willing to be repentent when he realizes that you're actually mad... and of course, he's very loving (just ask brian)
