holiday reading

For the last 10 years or so, I have alternated between reading The Chronicles of Narnia and the Anne of Green Gables series every year over Christmas break. Sadly, I haven't been able to read either this year because I am struggling to get the books read that I will teach next semester. Do not ask me why I have not chosen to teach the books from the 9th grade reading list that I have already read. That would make way too much sense!!

I say that I am struggling to read them because my number one talent is procrastination. I have heard that The Scarlet Pimpernel and Puddn'head Wilson are excellent books, but because they are now "work" for me, I have lost much of my inclination to read them. Instead, I read other people's blogs and think about how much I would rather be reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I saw the movie the weekend it came out and LOVED it! There were a few somewhat small things that were a little iffy (why does Aslan live in a tent?), but for the most part I did think it was excellent and remained true to the spirit of Lewis's book. The one exception to this in my mind was Liam Neeson as Aslan's voice. Yes, Aslan is gentle with the children, but I felt that he should also inspire awe and fear. His voice did neither for me.

Almost everyone I talked to about the movie enjoyed it as well. As I was reading blogs yesterday, I found a very different opinion on the movie and it really made me think. It kind of ties in to the whole thing with Aslan's voice. You can read the original post at http://amylovesbooks.blogspot.com. The gist of it was that the movie was mainly about celebrating the children, not celebrating Aslan.

I'm not sure whether or not I totally agree, but she made a good point. Basically the point that I expect to struggle with for the rest of my life: Its not about me. The world does not revolve around me, as much as I seem to think and act like it does.
