an old friend
I met up with an old friend today... the public library. My whole life, I've had a library card- Raleigh, Tallahassee, Auburn. I have very distinct memories from pre-elementary school of at least 3 branch libraries in Raleigh. In high school, I didn't go to coffee shops to study, I went to the library. Even in college, with access to the FSU library, I still went to the public library. I LOVE the library.
When I first moved to Atlanta, one of the selling points on the neighborhood I moved into was its proximity to the library. And yet, until today, it had been over 3 years since I had been in the public library in Atlanta. And even three years ago, it was only to check my email the first few weeks of my moving here.
When I walked into the library today, it was like bumping into an old friend. Maybe our reacquaintance will cut down on my book-buying habit. (Yesterday- 30 more at a used book sale. Only 10 were for me, I promise! and the rest for my classroom.) No matter, I felt like I had come home.

hey Courtney, I found your blog through Brett's blog. I too have a book buying addiction. It can get kinda sick. I have a category in our budget for books. But the library makes me think of studying in college, which I never did, but I still don't like thinking about studying. I think need to give the library another chance.
Katherine and I went to the library for the first time in a VERY long time about 6 months ago and it was just as you described...like meeting up with a very old friend. I had to give myself a Dewey Decimal System refresher. It was nice to get back in there though, although it has tapered off the past couple of months. I live my life from one obsession to the next.
Oh Katie, public libraries are so much friendlier than university! I bet that little one on the corner of Flat Shoals in East Atl is wonderful. And Brett, Dewey- a welcome relief after the Library of Congress system in school!
