Oh Canada!

I'm not really sure how to post about this trip, for a number of reasons. First of all, it feels like it was a REALLY long time ago... Sort of, it was. I left July 15, returned July 31. Also, so much happened! Something tells me a day-to-day account would bore my readership. Assuming I still have readership after my recent lack of posting. Anyway, here goes...

July 15: Flew out to Seattle- made it on to the plane with less than 30 seconds to spare. Literally. The people who walked up to the gate 30 seconds behind me did NOT make it onto the plane. Kate and her brother met me at the airport and shortly there after, we boarded the ferry to Port Orchard, across the Puget Sound. The highlights of Port Orchard were eating crab freshly caught in the crab trap and the clear view of Mount Rainier from the telescope.

From there, we headed to Port Angeles to catch the ferry to Vancouver Island. We had to spend the afternoon wandering around the town waiting on the ferry, so Kate bought a backgammon briefcase and we entertained ourselves.

On Vancouver Island, we headed to Kate's grandfather's farm, about an hour north of Victoria. We spent 4 days there and got to horseback ride, eat really good food, watch old 16mm films from her grandfather's missionary days in India, celebrate Kate's birthday, and waterski on a REALLY cold lake. We taught one of Kate's cousins to waterski as well.
Additionally, we spent a day in Victoria. We had high tea at the Empress Hotel, wandered around the harbor a bit, and toured Buchart Gardens. Since I know the pictures are really what want to see, that's enough commentary... Except that we almost didn't get to come back into the US because we only had our drivers licenses, not passports or birth certificates. I guess we look trustworthy though...

Well, anonymous, Kate is a rather silly girl and also is willing to humor me. Therefore, she carried the backgammon briefcase through town and gave me great reason to chuckle.
