on duty

Every other morning, I stand on duty at the top of the cafeteria stairs from 7:45-8:30am, keeping students from entering the main part of the building until the bell rings at 8:20 and then hustling them to their classes. Generally not the most exciting part of my job, but there are highlights occasionally, like this morning when I had the following conversation with one of my juniors.

She was exhorting me to bribe failing students with pizza to come to tutorial so that they can be successful and I can stopped being so stressed out. In the middle of our conversation, I had to excuse myself and take off down the hall as I observed one student throwing a large trashcan at another. Upon my return:

Student: Did someone teach you to walk like that? Where did you learn to walk like that?

Me: Like what?

Student: Like you're the Queen of England or something.

i like how you write "observe one student throwing a large trashcan at another" as if it were daily fare.
