rain

After dropping Jeremy off at the airport, we had originally planned to head back inland in New Hampshire and hike Monadnock. However, since we had our bikes, Craig told us about a 20 mile loop we could bike on the New Hampshire coast that he thought we would enjoy more. Sounded great to us, so we headed to the coast, toward Hampton and Rye Beach. En route, it started raining. And it kept raining. And raining. It did appear to be a lovely drive from what we could see through the clouds and rain. The road winds right next to the ocean, surrounded by mansions with beautiful landscaping.

In Hamilton, we looked for the state park the map indicated had camping, so that we could bike the loop the next morning, should it clear up. Alas, the state park only had RV camping. So we drove on and it kept raining. Eventually, we decided we would go ahead and drive to Maine since it was raining anyway and see how far we got that night; maybe we would bike on the way back down the coast.

Our Maine maps did little to indicate where there might be camping, but the Maine Welcome Center had fabulous information kiosks with all the necessary information.

We wound up in Freeport, at the Desert of Maine campground, still in the rain. We set up camp and made dinner, in the rain, and went to bed pretty early, snug in the tent, hoping for a clear day on Tuesday. The car reached its peak of disorganization as we struggled to find food and camping supplies without taking the bikes off the car.
