today's projects

Growing up, my mom made a lot of my clothes. She's always wanted me to learn to sew, but I have always been reticent. I took a sewing class in fifth grade or something like that and made a shirt and skirt, but they were hideous (mostly because of the patterns I chose) and that was my last foray into sewing. It was probably wise of my mother never to try herself to teach me to sew. My incompetence would've driven her crazy and it wouldn't have done much for our relationship, I'm sure.

Lately, I've had some growing desire to learn to sew and Kate, Betsy, and Laura are proficient sewers. Since I (for the first time in years) seem to have some free time, I've decided to learn. I spent most of the weekend cleaning up my room and clearing off the huge shelves where my packrat self collects things.

So today, Kate and I trekked to Forsyth Fabrics, I picked out some material, and made myself some curtains to hide the remaining junk on my bottom shelf.

As I mentioned before, I am incompetent, and Kate had to come fix the machine a number of times- like when I took pretty much the entire bobbin mechanism apart by accident. But, by the end of it, I can sew a fairly straight hem, rethread the bobbin and spool, and fix a number of the problems I was calling on Kate for at first. And, the curtains look pretty good, if I do say so myself. Next up, a skirt. Following that, when I get super-ambitious, a slip cover for the ugly striped chair.
