hazing

I never had to deal with hazing as an undergrad, so apparently I'm getting my due as a PhD student. Today, I had my 3 hour Politics and Governance of Education class, with the other members of my cohort, plus the 7 2nd years in my program, all of whom I have met and some other randoms. We had brief discussions of a number of different topics related to politics in education like compulsory attendance, upward mobility and zoning laws. I spoke up a couple of times if I felt like I had something relevant to say. You know, make sure the prof knows who I am and all that stuff.

So at the end of class, he passes out a few readings (including one of his own articles) for next week and tells us that for 5 of us are going to lead a portion of next week's discussion related to one of 5 of these articles. Am I going to volunteer? With all those second years who know what they're talking about, no way!

He gets volunteers for the first 2 articles and then comes to the one he authored. "No pressure, don't be intimidated," he says. Then I hear the voice behind me, a 2nd year who has the same advisor I have. Whom I had talked to once before that class. "Courtney wants to do it."

Om, no, not really. But I'd say now the prof knows who I am for sure. And how red my face can turn! And if you have any suggestions for a little friendly retaliation, I'd be happy to hear them.

Simple, you'll be leading a discussion and this person (guy or girl, btw?) will suddenly need to become your main contributor that you call on for insights. Repeatedly. They acted like they recalled you wanting to volunteer for the task, so maybe you just happen to remember all of the amazing insights this person had just before class, and you just need a little prompting from them to help you get it right in front of the class....

I'm sure you will do a great job. Not that I envy the pressure here, but I bet it will inspire great work from you. Go Courtney!
