so far
The kids came back to school on August 14. So far, for a variety of reasons that I won't go into here, mainly because I'm tired of complaining, its been a rough year. Someone asked me on Friday if my bad day had been because of all the children steeped in original sin. No, I said, because of the adults. Once again this year, it is my students who keep me going to work everyday.I teach these amazing kids who really enjoy learning. I cannot in anyway claim to have molded or shaped their minds. They have been dropped into my lap and I just get to run with it and enjoy it. We are reading Fahrenheit 451, talking about learning and thinking and what happens to society when people quit doing those things. I ask provocative questions trying to make them think about what they're saying and what they really value. I expected to face a classroom full of kids who wanted to live in a society where all they did was play sports and watch movies at school, where hedonism was the chief end. Instead, they've already thought about these things, they know how awful it would be in a pleasure-driven society. They shout back at me "No, we like to learn. Reading and thinking ARE important."
I just have to sit back and thank God that he is so good to me in the form of my students. They aren't just little drops of mercy in my day, they are deep wells.
