Freedom Trail Part Deux
Friday, July 13: After lunch we strolled from Boston Common down to Boston Public Garden. It was beautiful! We found the
Make Way for Ducklings statue- I had read the book as a child, but had little recollection of the story itself or that it was set in Boston.

From there, we explored Beacon Hill and admired all of the lovely and ridiculously expensive brownstones.

We wanted to finish the Freedom Trail, so we headed to the North End, the Old North Church, and Paul Revere's house, via the waterfront. The North End is the Italian district and we overheard the
best Italian accent. We didn't take the time or money to go into the Old North Church, but we did pay the $3 to tour Paul Revere's house. We hit cemetery #3, the Copps Hill Burying Ground, where we found Cotton Mather's grave.

Our trek continued into Charlestown where we toured the USS Consitution (Old Ironsides). You could see the steeple of the Old North Church and I envisioned Paul Revere having stared at it from a similar vantage point hundreds of years ago, looking for his lantern signal.

Never have I been so happy to see a National Park Service building as I was to walk into the one between the Constitution and Bunker Hill. It was air-conditioned and had running water! We thought we would sit down and watch the Bunker Hill video, so we slipped into the theater to await its start. After sitting there for 20 or so minutes, we both came quite close to falling asleep until Kate went to find a ranger and ask when the movie would start. We had no idea that it cost $3 to see the film and they had no idea that we were inside waiting to see it. They started it and told us we could pay later, but when the film ended, they didn't make us pay at all! Hooray for the NPS!!
Our energy replenished, we headed for Bunker Hill, which is actually Breeds Hill. We arrived at the monument just as the stairs to the top were closing. Our
capricious decision was to climb the 294 stairs. After having walked 11 or so miles. But it was worth it for the view.
Kate's friend Todd was meeting us for dinner and it worked out nicely for him to come pick us up from there and drive us back to Cambridge for dinner instead of having to walk another few miles to the T.
