4 to go
I only have 4 restaurants remaining on my list, and 2 1/2 weeks in which to eat at them. I knocked two out this weekend, with little planning.
Christina and I headed to
Sun in My Belly for brunch on Saturday morning. I had the french toast, stuffed with ricotta and covered in berries. While I love all of those things, I think Highland Bakery's french toast takes the cake. So, her choice was the winner: a scrambled egg panini with bacon and cheese. It was good food, but nothing to shout about- definitely the conversation is what made it most enjoyable!
It has been quite a weekend to catch up with old friends who are in town, which included a visit from Eva! She was in town for work, so it was a bit dubious as to whether or not I would even be able to see her, but on Sunday night, we had dinner. I hadn't even thought about where to go, but as a faithful blog reader, she wisely suggested we go somewhere on my list. So we headed down to
Agave. They have a large tequila bar, so I branched out a little and had a different margarita from the house. Not really sure I could tell you what the difference was, but it was tasty. We started with some fried calamari, which was excellent. Light, salty, perfect. For dinner, I had the Spicy Tequila Anejo Shrimp, with a cheddar cheese grits cake and asparagus. Eva had the blue corn chicken enchiladas with pinto beans. She cleaned her plate, so it must've been good. Mine was also quite tasty, though not the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. I would eat it again though. Overall, a solid place, vastly improved by the company.

lunch
One thing I love about summer is that I can go eat at the tasty- but expensive- places where I want to eat for lunch, when they are less expensive. I've checked two places off my list recently in that manner: last week, Christina and I ate at
Watershed and today, Amy Mo and I ate at
JCT Kitchen.
Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed by Watershed. We started off with an appetizer of butter bean hummus with a homemade pita and crudités. This was my favorite part. Christina had a pork sandwich that she really enjoyed, while I had salmon croquettes with some side item. It clearly was not memorable. The salmon croquettes were less than excellent. I was disappointed.
Today was a different story. Amy and I started with deviled eggs, topped with country ham that, to my undiscriminating palate, was hard to differentiate from prosciutto. They were quite tasty (though not as good as the ones at Cakes and Ale). Amy had the springer mountain fried chicken, with green beans and mac and cheese. My bite was yummy. I had the shrimp and grits. They weren't the best shrimp and grits I've ever had (the winner for that still goes to Crooks Corner in Carrboro, NC), but they were really, really good and I would definitely eat them again.
It was all so good that we were so full that we even passed up cupcakes from Star Provisions afterwards.

fine dining
I love good food. I would rather pay for a good meal with friends any day than go see a movie. I've always had a list of restaurants in Atlanta where I'd like to eat, but now that I'm moving, eating at the places on the list is a little more pressing. Here's what remains:
Chocolate Bar
2 Urban Licks
Agave
Watershed
Sun in my Belly
Avra
NanJCT Kitchen
There are probably a few more that should be added, but I've only got 2 months.
Last night, I checked one off the list: Laura and I ate at
Floataway Cafe. It was
excellent. We started with an appetizer of piccolo fritto: fried squid and lemons. It also came with a vinegar pepper dipping sauce. Who knew fried lemons could be so good?!
For a main course, Laura had a saffron risotto with Georgia white shrimp, asparagus, and peas. It was good and she loved it. But I loved what I had better: gnocchi in a light, thin buttery sauce, with maine lobster and grapefruit, seasoned with tarragon. It was like heaven in my mouth. We saved room for dessert and I am SO excited about eating my leftovers for lunch.
For dessert, we had lemon meringues with lemon mint granita. I was in the mood for something pretty light, and that hit the spot. All in all, one of the best meals I've had in a few months, with excellent conversation to boot.

I keep wondering, Courtney, when you visit these restaurants and think about blogging about them, do you sneak a pen out and write the name of your dinner on a napkin or a slip of paper or do you remember? This is terribly important.
Courtney - I have waited for this day for a long time. Thanks for the shout-out! And thanks for telling the world that I cleaned my plate! Love you. So fun to share dinner and conversation with you, my friend!
Carol- om yeah, I generally have to go back and look at the menu online to get it precisely. I mean, I remember that I ate shrimp and then go look at what it was called.
Thanks for not lurking, Eva! ;)
